Chateau Leamon was established by the Leamon family after the purchase of a small mixed farm in 1972. The fencing was removed and the property was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Semillon and Riesling in 1973.

Chateau Leamon was the 3rd winery ( after Balgownie and WaterWheel ) to be established in Bendigo during this renaissance period of the Australian wine industry in the 1960's and 70's.

The first vintage resulted in immediate success, as the 1977 Cabernet Sauvignon won the Small Winemakers Trophy at the National Wine Show
Canberra. This began an illustrious show career for Chateau Leamon, consistently winning medals in every year since our first vintage, including coming runner-up to the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1979
and 1985.
